Serving Up a Pretty Front Door

I was recently scrolling the pages of old issues of Country Living magazine and came across photos of front door hangings they had created. The base was a vintage silver platter. I love decorating with vintage platters, so I knew this was a DIY project I would take on.
I stopped in at a local thrift shop and evaluated their selection of vintage platters. I haven't yet found a silverplate platter with handles, but I did find this pretty floral-patterned aluminum platter. The pattern seems appropriate for the season, so I made the $8 purchase and brought it home and gave it a good cleaning with Bar Keepers Friend.

This Fall, Hobby Lobby has had some sparkly fall leaves in burgundy, rust, and gold. I've fallen in love with the rich burgundy, so I used that as the basis for my arrangement, and it will be the basis for my Thanksgiving tablescape.
I started with a stem of deep colored silk leaves, then wired in three sparkly accent leaves.
Next, I made a bow using a wired plaid ribbon and a sheer burgundy ribbon. I added in two lengths of curled ribbon tails.
With all the decoration assembled, I then wired the stem to the tray and added a wired ribbon to cover the connecting point.
After a couple of trial-and-error attempts I figured out the best way to add a loop of ribbon for hanging the tray (hot glue to the rim of the platter) and I eventually used two Command Strips to secure the platter to my front door. With Kansas wind it's always a good idea to secure what hangs on the front door!
I think this is gorgeous!

Welcome to my home in the season of Thanksgiving.
