Savoring the Last Blooms

As we flip the calendar from October to November, I found myself in the garden doing several days' worth of fall cleanup. The masses of petunias and Sunpatiens have been pulled, perennials have been trimmed back, and the roses have been pruned for winter. So sad to see all this vibrant color gone.

As Mike and I did the fall cleanup we were able to harvest the last hydrangea blooms, pretty roses and buds, and a nice sized bunch of lavender.

I made a loose arrangement of the hydrangeas. Filled a mason jar that happened to be on my kitchen counter with the roses and made three nice nosegays with the lavender. Savoring the lasts bits of summer.

While we were in the mode of fall cleanup I brought some potted geraniums inside with the hope of nurturing them through the winter.

The plant cuttings I brough home from Wyoming last month have grown nice sets of roots and I was happy to get them transplanted into pots.

It's lovely to have so many plants growing indoors now.

As we approach Thanksgiving, our young little Oak tree is showing its color and producing tiny acorns, and the front flower bed is vibrant with yellow mums and our homegrown pumpkins.

We've had a couple of nights with temperatures in the 30's but haven't had a hard frost or freeze yet. It feels good to have the garden cleanup done for the year.

Now it's time to dream about what to plant next year!
